Day Camp 2006

Our Boy Scout district runs a Cub Scout Day Camp every year at the Damascus Izaak Walton League. We had nearly our entire pack attend! Although our town got ten inches of rain that week, we still had a great time. And the weather cleared in time for the boys to launch their model rockets on Friday!

I need some pictures here!

Frederick Keys camping trip

This year's family camping trip to the Frederick Keys stadium was a little unusual--it began in late June and didn't end until mid-July! On its original date, the game was rained out halfway through, so the Keys invited us all back to another game in July. But some Keys camping traditions held fast. Once again, they showed cartoons & movies on the jumbotron while we pitched our tents in the outfield. Once again, they kept the lights on until one am. And once again, they played reville at 6:45 am.

Damascus Day 2006

Our town has its own parade on the Friday after Independence Day. We marched from the Weis parking lot to the Fire Department Activity Building, where we ate supper, played games, and watched the fireworks. We even met the Lt. Governor of Maryland!

Fishing Derby 2006

Every year, the Kelpy family generously invites us to fish in their pond in Damascus. This year's haul even exceeded last year's records--the winning boy pulled in 26 fish in three hours, and the winning family landed a total of 45! Most of them were sunfish and bluegills, but there were a few large-mouth bass as well.

Halloween Party

The Kinnamans invited the whole pack over to their house for a Halloween party! Fortunately, no one took a picture of Mr Kuszewski's "Assault and Battery" costume.

Veterans Day 2006

The boys from our pack led Damascus Elementary School's Veterans Day observance on Armistice Day, 2006. It was Mr Clemons's idea, both to help the boys learn patriotism and so that his den could finish an achievement which requires participating in an outdoor flag ceremony. The DES safety patrol raised the colors, and we led the school in the pledge and read some paragraphs we'd written about our veterans. Some members of the Damascus American Legion attended too, so we had someone to thank in person.

Mr Inscoe even wrote an article about our Veterans Day program for the council's adult leader newsletter. We're looking forward to seeing us in print!

Selling Popcorn

We sell popcorn to help pay for all the badges we earn. Mr Manor was our pack's intrepid Popcorn Kernel again. This year, our new Tigers helped man the stand outside the Damascus Safeway. They sold a whole bunch!

Pinewood Derby 2007

The Pinewood Derby is one of the highlights of the Cub Scouting year. The boys build wooden cars with their parents and race them against each other for everlasting glory & trophies. The top finishers in our pack got to go on to the District finals, where they raced against the champions from all the packs in Germantown, Gaithersburg, Boyds, Poolesville, and of course Damascus.

District Pinewood Derby Championship 2007

Every year, the top finishers from our pack's Pinewood Derby get to go on to the next level--the Black Hills District (of the National Capital Area Council, Boy Scouts of America) Pinewood Derby championship. We raced against the best cars from packs in Damascus, Germantown, Gaithersburg, Boyds, and Poolesville. Boys whose cars win there can go on to ever-higher levels of competition, until someone wins the national championship in Texas. None of our boys' cars made it to the final round, but Matt won a trophy for his "iCub Nano" car design.

Arrow of Light ceremony 2007

The Arrow of Light is the highest award in Cub Scouting. It is the only Cub Scout award that may be worn on the Boy Scout (and even adult leader) uniform. The members of our local Order of the Arrow lodge (an honor & service society of senior Boy Scouts) comes to our pack every year to claim our very best boys and award them the Arrow of Light. Then they march over the bridge to join their Boy Scout troops.
